What is the difference between KVG/LAMal health insurance and VVG/LCA insurance?

KVG/LAMal is compulsory health insurance in Switzerland. Its benefits are set by law and are identical with all insurers. Supplementary insurance (VVG/LCA) is optional and offers additional benefits. The cover, premiums and admission conditions vary from one company to another.

Can I take out VVG/LCA insurance if I have health problems?

Yes, but unlike KVG/LAMal, supplementary insurers may ask you to complete a medical questionnaire, accept your application with exclusions or refuse it altogether. It is therefore important to check the admission conditions before cancelling any existing cover.

How do I change supplementary health insurance in Switzerland?

To change your VVG/LCA supplementary insurance, you must respect the notice periods set out in your policy. Before cancelling anything, always wait for written confirmation that the new insurer has accepted you, so that you do not lose important cover.

How much does supplementary health insurance cost in Switzerland?

The price depends in particular on your age, the insurer, the benefits chosen and the terms of the policy. Premiums can differ considerably for comparable cover. At Veltica, we analyse the offers to find cover that suits your needs and your budget.

What is a waiting period in VVG/LCA insurance?

A waiting period is a period after the policy comes into force during which certain benefits are not yet reimbursed. It may apply in particular to dental or maternity benefits. Its length and terms depend on the insurance taken out.

Can I keep my supplementary insurance if I change my KVG/LAMal health insurer?

Yes. In Switzerland, you can choose one health insurer for your basic KVG/LAMal insurance and keep your supplementary insurance with another insurer. There is no need to hold both policies with the same company. However, watch out for any discounts linked to bundling them.
